I had the wonderful privilege of growing up in Papua New Guinea as a MK (missionary kid) from the age of three. I trusted in Jesus Christ as my personal Savior when I was five and enjoyed teaching the Bible to village children on a regular basis when I was a teenager. Proverbs 3:5-6 became my life verses when my Mom was killed in a tragic car accident in New Guinea during my senior year of High School. God used my Dad’s testimony during that difficult time to reaffirm my burden for missions. My wife, Shawn, and I returned to Papua New Guinea in 2000 to serve as missionaries in a remote tribal area called the Simbai. Our family loved the people and the privilege we had to share the Gospel with them and to partner with them to plant remote village churches. A highlight of our ministry was assisting the churches to establish their own mission agency, the Open Door Baptist Mission of Papua New Guinea. In 2010, God led our family to return to the U.S. and I served as the Assistant Director before becoming the Director of Open Door Baptist Missions in 2012. I am a homeschool Dad who loves to spend time with my wife and three daughters: Abby, Sydney and Hayley.

Rev. Kim-Axel Kuhr
Assistant Director

  • BS in Mechanical Design, Bradley University - 1976
  • Master of Ministry, Bob Jones University - 2002
  • Missionary to the Netherlands, 2008-2012
  • I worked as a design engineer in many different capacities from 1976 until 1998. My work as an engineer led me to travels in many different foreign countries. The Lord called me later in life to full time Christian service, while serving as a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church in Concord, NH and evangelizing in a prison ministry. At age 48 the Lord led me to pursue a graduate Bible degree from Bob Jones University. During a missions conference at BJU, the Lord knit my heart to church planting in the Netherlands. In 2012 the Lord redirected my path to serve new and existing missionaries in the same way that we had been served on the mission field. Chris and I have two daughters, Jennifer and Amanda, and four grand children.

Dr. John Burnette
Director Emeritus

  • BA in Christian Education, Bob Jones University - 1967
  • MA in Christian Education, Bob Jones University - 1969
  • DD from Puerto Rico Baptist College - 2001

Having the privilege of growing up in a Christian home and accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour at age six, John was greatly influenced by the many missionaries that regularly visited his church. After entering college with the goal of becoming a civil engineer, the Lord used a summer missionary experience to challenge John for the ministry. In July of 1969, John and his wife Merrianna were accepted for missionary service in Brazil. During a ministry that spanned twenty-four years, they were involved in both church planting and the training of national workers.

In 1993 John accepted the invitation to become director of Open Door Baptist Missions. Besides administrative responsibilities, he has had the opportunity to visit numerous mission fields and to represent the mission in churches, Christian colleges and conferences. His desire is to challenge God's people regarding missions, as well as to encourage and assist those who are serving on the field.
