In 1 Corinthians 4:12-13a, Paul writes regarding his missionary team: “And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world.”  Paul’s humility and servanthood stood in sharp contrast to others who claimed to follow Christ, but their worldly wisdom, selfish ambition and sinful behavior proved their true colors.  Paul and his team were willing to be treated as the scum of the earth for the sake of the Gospel.  The spiritual battle in worldwide evangelism remains intense today.  Missionaries face all kinds of opposition including threats, defamation, false accusations and other mistreatments from the world and even sometimes those professing to be Christians.  Their constant giving and serving is often repaid with revilement.  It is imperative that we undergird and support our missionaries through prayer and communication so that they too will endure and finish their race well.
